Since 1998 I have donated graphics for the George Washington Birthday Classic 10K. This major area event supports the band programs at Alexandria’s single public high school, T.C. Williams.

I created a fresh, humorous logo, to harmonize with Alexandria’s
“Fun Side of the Potomac”
theme. This stylized “smiling George” profile, with a simple wig, hat and smile against the Gothic letter “G,” sets the right tone for a recreational event. The text uses roman and swash italic typefonts for an old-fashioned yet cheerful look.

Race materials include tee shirts, registration forms, ads, sponsor mailings, race packets, web graphics, certificates, awards and signage. Each year’s artwork has a different theme. Last year, I emphasized the lighter side of running a midwinter race: “I shoulda brought gloves!”

This year, because the GWB Classic is the first race of spring, I created a montage of sunshine and snowflakes. I scanned the dollar portrait and set it inside a clip-art Victorian sunburst. I used Flash to break snowflake images into vector graphics. I then combined the images in Photoshop. The final artwork was printed in in three colors for the tee shirt, two for the printed materials.
