The Paralyzed Veterans of America needed two very different annual reports: one an overview of the organization; another describing its research and education foundations.

PVA programs improve health care, champion veterans’ benefits, improve access, and build confidence through sport and recreation. This is the organization’s flagship brochure, attracting members and donors.

The ornate hall in the cover photo makes a good setting for PVA’s mission statement. I used Illustrator and Photoshop to create a virtual wall carving. Each “chapter” features a sidebar about people the PVA has helped. Duotones with a slight watercolor effect add a warm, human feel.

The Research and Education Program Annual Report lists projects funded by PVA’s two foundations. This all-business annual report tells the donor: this is where your money goes.

Nerve cells, a major focus of research, form a dramatic backdrop to the cover, while education and training are shown by a woman using a hand sling, and by a wheelchair chin-control prototype. Inside, grantees’ photos are arranged in front of a sidebar echoing the cover theme, leaving most of the page space free to describe the projects.
